The Cornwall Sustainability Awards 2013 shortlist has now been announced and includes two innovative projects supported by the work of Community Energy Plus.

The Illogan Green Ripple Project aimed to engage a whole community with the benefits of domestic renewable installations and hence is in the running for two awards – Best Community and Domestic Renewable Energy Scheme. The holistic approach of the Green Ripple Project set out to raise levels of education and awareness around energy usage, instigating behavioural change and providing a lasting legacy for the community.

Green Ripple Launch 8.7.11The Tolvaddon Estate within Illogan Parish was selected as a suitable community. As well as the benefit to the individuals of reduced energy bills from the installation of Solar PV, the strength of this project was that a proportion of the Feed in Tariff has been ring-fenced to form a community legacy fund for Tolvaddon, which it is hoped will prove a positive force for years to come.

Illogan Green Ripple was a partnership between Cornwall Council, Community Energy Plus, Illogan Parish Council and Local Volunteer groups.

The second project supported by Community Energy Plus to be shortlisted for Best Community Renewable Energy Scheme is Community Power Cornwall. Community Power Cornwall is an Industrial and Provident Society designed to facilitate community energy projects. The group was formed in response to a shortage of skills and access to finance, which was hindering the evolution of community owned sustainable energy development in Cornwall.

Gorran School 003Community Power Cornwall installed its first two wind turbines at Gorran in 2011, part financed through the launch of Cornwall’s first ever public share offer for renewable energy. The group is now able to use revenues generated from this first installation to act as an at-risk developer for other emerging community energy schemes across the county. As well as share offers, the Low Carbon Fund was also developed by Community Power Cornwall for the management, allocation and distribution of revenue from this and other projects, both run by and available to all members of the local community.

The 11th Annual Cornwall Sustainability Awards will be held at The Atlantic Hotel in Newquay on Friday 6th December when the winners will be announced.
