Insulation scheme continues to keep Cornish homes cosy

Loft Insulation

A Cornwall Council funded insulation scheme which has helped 2737 households in the past year to save a combined total of around £400,000 [1] on their annual heating bills has pledged to help another 2900 homes over the coming months.

The Cornish sustainable energy charity Community Energy Plus is working in partnership with Cornwall Council to offer homeowners and private tenants in Cornwall a significantly discounted offer for loft and cavity wall insulation at £99 for each type of insulation.

Around a third of all the heat that escapes from an un-insulated home is lost through the walls and a quarter is lost through the roof. A well-insulated house keeps its warmth indoors and by saving energy households will produce less carbon dioxide emissions which contribute to climate change.

Living in a home that is adequately heated is important for comfort but vital for staying healthy, particularly for older people, children and those living with long term illnesses.

Cornwall has the highest rate of fuel poverty in the South West, with almost one in five households spending more than 10 per cent of their income on heating their homes.  To help alleviate the problem Community Energy Plus is also offering free insulation to households at the greatest risk of fuel poverty.

Cornwall Council’s cabinet member for housing Mark Kaczmarek said:  “Insulation is a simple but extremely effective way for Cornish householders to make their homes more energy efficient to help tackle the issue of climate change and I’m pleased that that Cornwall Council has been able to help so many local residents to enjoy the benefits of reduced fuel bills so that they can live warmer, healthier lives.”

Ian Smith, Managing Director of Community Energy Plus, said: “Rising energy costs combined with really cold winter last year helped to emphasise the importance of making sure that your house is properly insulated.  We saw a particularly high take up of the scheme during the cold snaps but would like to remind those who have not yet taken up the free and discounted insulation offers that they should act now to get ready for the winter and make sure that they don’t miss out.”

Installing loft and cavity wall insulation to an un-insulated property can help a household save up to £255 each year on their heating bills – £145 through loft insulation and £110 by insulating its cavity walls.

[1] Calculation based Energy Saving Trust predicted savings for a typical un-insulated three-bedroom semi-detached property of £145 a year with loft insulation and £110 a year with cavity wall insulation.  Between 1 April 2010 and 31 March 2011 Community Energy Plus installed insulation to the lofts of 1,722 homes and cavity wall insulation to 1,345 homes in Cornwall.
