Householders in Cornwall are being encouraged to act quickly to take advantage of free insulation, heating and draught-proofing measures from local charity Community Energy Plus before funding runs out.
Following confirmation of time-limited funding from the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC), loft and cavity wall insulation, draught-proofing and heating systems are being offered to those who own their own home or privately rent. The charity particularly wants to hear from people who are elderly, suffering from a long term illness or are caring for young children. However, anyone who is worried about fuel bills, staying warm or a cold and damp home is urged to contact Community Energy Plus.
Call Community Energy Plus on Freephone 0800 954 1956 to find out if you are eligible. The offer is subject to availability and strictly time-limited.
Householders without loft insulation could be losing a quarter of their heat through the roof, so insulating can save up to £175 per year. Installing cavity wall insulation can save up to £135 per year, with draught-proofing potentially saving a further £55 per year.*
Tim Jones, Chief Executive at Community Energy Plus, explains the importance of customers taking up this offer quickly: “Grant funding for these measures is becoming less frequent, so it’s important people take advantage of this offer whilst it is still available. The benefits of doing so are not only a reduction in energy bills but also the improved comfort of living in a warmer home. In addition to this, the funding also has the wider benefits of helping to alleviate fuel poverty in Cornwall and further reduce carbon emissions.”
Customers taking advantage of the loft insulation offer could also benefit from a loft clearing service by the local Handyperson service through Mears Home Improvement Ltd and Independent Futures. The service is designed to ensure that those who feel unable to clear their own loft can still take advantage of free insulation offers.
Through the service, the content of the lofts will be carefully moved to a suitable location, leaving the loft ready to be insulated. Prices for clearance start at £40, but some financial assistance is available for people on certain means-tested benefits.
Handyperson Services, who are part funded by Cornwall Council, have been operational across Cornwall for over 10 years, and provide a valued and trusted service which enables older and disabled people to get many minor repairs and adaptations carried out.
Joe Croft, Agency Manager at Mears Home Improvement Ltd, said: “Handyperson Services were set up to allow older and disabled people to remain independent and safe in their own homes. Many people are simply unable to clear their own loft to allow for insulation measures, but this service means they will be in a position to take advantage of insulation offers.”
