A Truro-based charity which provides help to local people struggling with their energy bills has advised Cornish householders to beware of energy companies taking advantage of their complacency this winter. Community Energy Plus expects that in January many households will receive a very un-merry post festive surprise when they receive their quarterly electricity and gas bills and see the impact of rising energy prices.
Research by the energy regulator Ofgem finds comparing and switching supplier or energy tariff can make a big difference to your gas and electricity bills – with annual savings of around £300 available. Despite the savings however it is believed that only 40% of households take action to reduce their energy costs by switching from standard variable tariffs to fixed rate tariffs.
As part of their work to fight fuel poverty, the charity launched their collective tariff switching initiative in January 2015. Community Energy Switch has so far helped over 3,000 people to switch. The initiative has kept over half a million pounds in the pockets of householders but the charity believes that the benefits could be several times greater if more people in Cornwall gave switching a try.
Community Energy Plus have urged everyone who is fed-up of seeing energy companies making massive profits at the expense of their customers to register their interest in switching by 8th January in order to access their collective’s winning tariffs. It’s free to register at www.communityenergyswitch.org.uk or by calling their switching partner on Freephone 0800 804 7247 and there’s no obligation to switch.
Dr Tim Jones, Chief Executive of Community Energy Plus, said: “The average dual fuel energy bill in our region is £1,382 a year which is substantially more than other household costs, yet shopping around for cheaper tariffs is often an annual task which many householders fail to complete. Doing nothing can be a costly mistake so our message to people who are fed up with high energy bills is simple – take control of your energy bills by switching and saving with us.”
Community Energy Plus is a local charity which provides free advice and practical help for householders to enjoy warmer, healthier homes. As well as making energy bills more affordable, each tariff switch generates a small commission from the new energy supplier which is helping the charity to continue its work to fight fuel poverty in Cornwall.
Community Energy Switch is open to everyone – whether they live in or outside Cornwall. Once the winning tariffs are available, householders will be able to see how much they could save and how it compares to other tariffs on the market to be sure that they’re getting a good deal before they agree to switch.
