Christmas bonus for energy saving pensioners

A couple from Halsetown, near St Ives, received an unexpected present a few days before Christmas after winning Community Energy Plus’s £250 prize draw.

Community Energy Plus, Cornwall’s award winning charity that delivers local solutions to fuel poverty and energy efficiency, arranged for free loft insulation to be fitted to Guy and Erica Sutcliffe’s home in October.  The couple were automatically entered into a prize draw with householders in Cornwall over the age of 70 or in receipt of certain allowances who have taken up the scheme over the past three months.

Retired training supervisor Guy Sutcliffe, 73, said: “We were overjoyed to find out that we’d won £250 simply by taking up the free offer to make our home warmer for winter.  We immediately noticed that our home felt much cosier after having the loft insulation fitted and it wasn’t necessary to light our wood-fuelled stove every day to top-up the warmth provided by our night storage heaters.  Winning Community Energy Plus’s prize draw was an unexpected bonus on top of being able to enjoy a warmer home.”

Rob Pickering, Senior Project Officer at Community Energy Plus said: “Fuel poverty affects almost 40,000 households across the county and Community Energy Plus is committed to helping people in Cornwall access advice and practical help to save energy and make their homes warmer.  We’ve done a lot of work in West Cornwall, one of our six targeted Home Health zones, to help community groups improve their energy efficiency and understand their renewable energy options. Since the launch in September more than100 homes in the St Ives and Hayle area and almost 2,000 across the other Home Health Zones have taken up the offer to have free loft and cavity wall insulation through the scheme, which is available to all homes within qualifying areas.”

The Home Health Scheme is part funded by Cornwall Council.  Julian German, Cornwall Council cabinet member for the Environment said: “Good home insulation can help households save up to £300 a year on fuel bills.  It’s a win-win situation; households enjoy warmer and healthier homes with reduced heating costs and Cornwall makes important progress towards reducing the CO2 emissions that contribute to global warming and climate change.  I’m pleased that more than 2,000 households have already benefitted from this important scheme which will be rolled out across other areas in Cornwall in the months to come.”
