Envision
Envision is an energy, waste and water advisory service for small and medium sized enterprise. Community Energy Plus, in partnership with The Environment Agency, Groundwork, Global Action Plan, ReZolve Kernow and Cornwall Business School are offering 5 days of training and support to 300 businesses in Cornwall. A small contribution from the companies themselves will secure an individually tailored package of mentoring, training and support to improve environmental performance and reduce energy, waste and water bills.
Recent participants in the Envision programme include:
Budock Vean Hotel - An energy audit identified potential savings of around £28,000 per year. As a result of the audit the hotel grounds and golf course are now managed with organic fertiliser and the hotel has improved recycling and separation of hazardous waste streams. Biodiesel is also being considered for all grounds and golf course machinery. As a result, the hotel has achieved a Green Tourism Business Scheme gold award.
Cornwall Glass and Glazing Ltd. - Envision carried out a detailed energy survey, assessed waste streams and provided energy management awareness training. As a result Cornwall Glass has adopted an energy management policy and is committed to maximising energy saving opportunities. The amount of waste going to landfill has been reduced by 84 tonnes per year and 48-64 tonnes of glass waste is now being recycled or re-used in Cornwall by ReMaDe Kernow, rather than being transported to Edinburgh. The company is now looking into options for heat recovery from their glass furnace to reduce energy consumption.
Gylly Beach Café Ltd. - Envision reviewed energy usage, introduced a new water management scheme and advised on legislation. The review identified potential energy savings of around £2,800 (36,000kWh) and 12,500 Kg CO2 per year, plus £1000 per year in potential water savings. The café now purchases fair trade, organic and local produce wherever possible.
Sharp’s Brewery - A baseline environmental review highlighted priority areas for action, leading to savings of £1,211 from improved energy management and £2,764 savings from installation of meters and monitoring processes. Five tonnes of packaging waste has been diverted from landfill and is now being recycled, while 463 tonnes of trade effluent has been diverted from waste treatment to agriculture. The Head Brewer followed the BS 8555 training offered by Envision and the brewery is working towards the implementation of an environmental management system.
